Fraternity to promote ‘green’ cars

By on November 12, 2008

Green machines, start your engines.

A coed professional fraternity will display fuel efficient Chevy cars as part of the Green REVolution event on Legion Field today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Pi Sigma Epsilon will work with the Athens Marketing Partners as part of the Chevy marketing program to possibly show cars such as

the Cobalt XFE, a fuel efficient Malibu, Tahoe Hybrid and Equinox Fuel Cell.

The local band Low End Honey and Brandon Marsolo will provide live entertainment at the event.

The fraternity wants to let people ages 18-30 know there are vehicles available other than SUVs and trucks, that are much more fuel efficient, said Chelsea Curley, a junior from Lilburn, a project coordinator.

“Going green is one of the most important aspects of purchasing a car,” Curley said. “When we graduate, most students will go out and buy cars. In research, we [Pi Sigma Epsilon] found that most people only know about hybrids. Now, they’ll have more education on fuel resources.”

The Green REVolution plays off the car company’s actual slogan, ‘An American Revolution, said Emily Hollomon, a senior from Milledgeville and public relations specialist for Athens Marketing Partners.

A local dealership loaned the vehicles to the national sales, marketing and management organization.

“We had the Tahoe on display at Memorial Hall a while ago,” Hollomon said. “And the event was a lot better than we expected. It was a small event but a lot of people stopped by to show interest.”

Outback Steakhouse will sell about 300 plates of food for $10 each. Proceeds will go to cancer patients who cannot afford treatment.

Everyone ordering plates has the chance to win dinner for four at the restaurant, and teachers may have their plates delivered. There will be a raffle for prizes, including mp3 players and an autographed Widespread Panic poster.
