Lady Dogs roll in opener
The Georgia women’s basketball team showed up for what became a glorified scrimmage Saturday evening at Stegeman Coliseum, in an 85-35 rout over the Alabama State Hornets.
Porsha Phillips scored 15 points in her Georgia debut and Ashley Houts added 14 as the Lady Dogs held the Hornets to only 13 second half points as every member of the Georgia team stepped on the floor during the victory.
“We wanted to be plus-10 rebounds and plus-10 in turnovers and we got those two things done,” head coach Andy Landers said. “We wanted to be plus-10 free throws [as well] and we got those things done today.”
Houts opened the scoring for the Lady Dogs (1-0) on a 3-pointer and Georgia never let up, building a 31-11 lead before a short Alabama State (0-1) run made it 31-16. But Georgia scored 12 straight points to go ahead 43-16 and eventually headed into halftime with a 49-22 advantage.
Phillips and Houts led the way in the first half with 11 points as the Lady Dogs shot 64 percent from the floor. Erica Lumpkin was almost the entire offense for the Hornets as she hit on 4-of-5 3-point shots she attempted for 12 of the 22 points for Alabama State.
The Hornets could not buy a basket after intermission, as they did not score a field-goal after the 17:17 mark in the second half and only scored four points – all coming from free throws – after the 16:41 mark.
Houts and Phillips played limited minutes in the second half for the Lady Dogs but it didn’t matter as they kept putting points on the board. Jasmine Lee scored eight of her nine points in the half and Christy Marshall scored six of her 11 points after the break. Danielle Taylor also finished the game in double figures with 12 points.
“When I’m out there, I try to play as hard as I can for as long as I’m out there,” Houts said of not playing as many minutes as normal because of the blowout. “I know its hard sometimes, but it’s my job to hold everyone else accountable to an extent, and to make sure everything’s where it needs to be out there on the floor.”
A scary moment for the Lady Dogs occurred halfway through the second half when Second Team All-SEC selection Angel Robinson came down hard on her already injured left shoulder. She came out for the remainder of the game, but Landers doesn’t believe it to be too serious.
“I’m not too concerned about that . I think it scared her as much as it did anything,” he said. “She’s going to hit the floor again, and again, and again, that’s part of it, everybody does it, but she’s just got to get up and go.”
Georgia will play Oakland University Thursday in Rochester, Mich.
