QUARTER CAPS

By on November 17, 2008

First Quarter: Auburn 6-Georgia 0

Georgia opened the game with a 10-play, 80-yard drive but came away empty as Blair Walsh had a field goal attempt blocked. Late in the quarter, Georgia was to receive a punt from Auburn, but Prince Miller muffed the kick and Auburn recovered. On the next play, Auburn quarterback Kodi Burns found running back Mario Fannin turning up the field for a 52-yard pass play that went for a touchdown. Auburn did not get the extra point, as a bad snap did not allow kicker Wes Byrum to give Auburn a seven point advantage.

Second Quarter: Georgia 7-Auburn 6

Up 6-0, Auburn was driving to extend its lead until Burns went back to pass and dropped the football. Defensive tackle Geno Atkins recovered the fumble for Georgia, but the offense was not able to sustain a drive. Auburn got the ball back but was forced into a three-and-out and set Georgia’s offense up at midfield. Georgia scored in three plays as quarterback Matthew Stafford threw a screen pass to Knowshon Moreno who took the ball 35 yards in for his first receiving score as a Bulldog.

Third Quarter: Georgia 10-Auburn 6

On Georgia’s first possession, the Bulldogs were at Auburn’s 29-yard line but elected to go for it on fourth-and-9 instead of attempting a field goal. Stafford threw a pass intended for A.J. Green, but it fell incomplete. Auburn went three-and-out and punted, and this time Georgia’s offense didn’t come away empty-handed. The Bulldogs went nine plays for 39 yards and Walsh kicked a field goal to move Georgia up by four points.

Fourth Quarter: Georgia 17-Auburn 13

Auburn scored a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to retake the lead when Fannin scampered for a 35-yard touchdown. Georgia came right back down the field and scored a touchdown. Stafford found Green streaking across the middle of the field, in between two defenders, and hit the freshman for a 17-yard touchdown. Auburn then drove down the field but stalled when Burns’ pass to Montez Billings fell incomplete. Georgia was forced to punt on its next drive, even after attempting to draw Auburn offsides with a fake punt formation, and Auburn gave the Bulldogs one last scare. Auburn started at its own 20 and drove down to Georgia’s 14. With eight seconds left and on fourth down, Burns attempted a pass to Ben Tate in the right corner of the end zone but overthrew it with Rennie Curran in coverage. Georgia’s victory formation came onto the field, and Stafford took a knee to secure the win.
