Richt: Moreno different since Florida loss

By on November 17, 2008

After Georgia’s 17-13 win over Auburn, head coach Mark Richt said running back Knowshon Moreno’s attitude has changed since Georgia’s loss against Florida.

Richt said the development has been evident in Moreno’s last two weeks in practice.

“The thing I’ve liked about Knowshon in the last two weeks in particular is how he’s practiced,” Richt said. “Not that he doesn’t always practice well, but that he’s had a different attitude starting two Tuesdays ago and it hasn’t changed.”

Richt said Moreno’s change might have stemmed from criticism the running back received from taking himself out of games at given moments.

“I don’t know if people got under his skin about taking himself out of the game or what,” Richt said. “He just seemed to have a little edge. He looked like he was kind of mad.”

Against Auburn, Moreno finished with 131 yards on 22 carries. Moreno also caught four passes for 58 yards and a touchdown.

Defensive tackle makes offensive play

On a 4th-and-1 in the third quarter, defensive tackle Geno Atkins came in on offense to provide a lead block on a quarterback sneak.

Atkins pancake blocked his man, as quarterback Matthew Stafford followed for a two-yard gain.

“He was where [right tackle] Justin [Anderson] would line up,” Richt said. “It’s kind of a QB sneak with a lead blocker.”

Richt said he figured Atkins would be able to contribute a key block in Anderson’s absence. “Oh yeah, we expected him to do that,” he said.

Same scenario, Green gets the ball

Down 13-10 in the fourth quarter, Stafford found a familiar target from last week for the go-ahead touchdown.

On 2nd-and-9 from Auburn’s 17, Stafford hit receiver A.J. Green on a pass thrown between two defenders and into Green’s outstretched arms.

It was the second week in a row Stafford found Green for the go-ahead score.

“When my number is called, I’m just trying to make a play for Stafford,” Green said.

Green said he was fairly confident about breaking free from his defender.

“Before we even ran the play, I knew I was going to come open on it,” Green said.
