Volleyball continues success on court
The Georgia volleyball team kept its dream of going to the NCAA Tournament alive and said goodbye to two seniors, Maria Taylor and Anjelica Partridge.
The Bulldogs beat Auburn in four sets (12-25, 25-23, 25-14, and 25-22) and now have three games remaining, all on the road.
“You know it’s your last home game, and you can never describe how that feels,” Taylor said. “It’s sad but it’s happy at the same time, and I’m glad we could win it. But we’ve got so much more volleyball left to play.”
Taylor led the way for Georgia by posting a team-high 15 kills on a .412 attack percentage. Sophomore Lindsay Gehan had nine kills, and freshman Kathleen Gates ran the offense with 33 assists. Freshman Carla Tietz led the defense with 17 digs.
Sophomore Erika Clark, who leads the team in total digs and is second to Taylor in kills per set, missed the match with an internal problem, head coach Joel McCartney said. She will have an X-Ray on Tuesday.
Georgia (16-12, 9-8 SEC) began the match slow as they lost the first set 25-15 to Auburn (6-23, 1-17). But Taylor refused to let her team lose.
“Nobody [is] more important in that leadership role,” McCartney said. “Maria’s leadership role isn’t to have to construct any sort of fancy motivational message for this team, her role is to go out and just be the stabilizer and the terminator and she did those things.”
Georgia took the final three sets.
“If you have no pressure, it means your out of it for the season,” McCartney said. “We want that pressure. It means that we’re still in it.”
Georgia’s final three matches are against SEC foes Arkansas, Ole Miss and Louisiana State, and a win against all three could guarantee the Bulldogs a spot in the NCAA tournament.
