Dogs stumble in NIT’s
For the second consecutive game the Georgia men’s basketball team put forth frustrating results on offense and it proved decisive Monday night.
In the first round of the NIT Season Tipoff in Purdue’s Mackey Arena, the Loyola of Chicago Ramblers (1-1) downed the Dogs 74-53 and sent Georgia to the consolation bracket.
The Bulldogs (1-1) shot 33 percent from the field, including 1 of 13 from the 3-point line and in two games this season Georgia is shooting 38 percent.
The Ramblers went on a 15-2 run to begin the second half, breaking a 29-29 halftime tie wide open. The Bulldog deficit hit double digits with 15:55 left in the game, a margin that was extended until the final buzzer.
“What you saw was a young and inexperienced Georgia team playing an older, veteran team in Loyola,” head coach Dennis Felton told Georgiadogs.com. “We never really developed any confidence in what we were doing. Once we got down, we really struggled offensively. We’ll need to take lessons from this game and come back strong tomorrow.”
Georgia also struggled with ball control and distribution, committing 18 turnovers to only five assists. Point guards Zac Swansey and Dustin Ware combined for eight of those turnovers and only three assists.
Freshman Travis Leslie led Georgia in scoring with 23 points and also pulled down seven rebounds. Terrance Woodbury was the only other Bulldog in double figures with 19. The rest of the roster managed only 11 points combined.
The Ramblers were balanced offensively as four players reached double-digit scoring and two others finished with nine points.
The Bulldogs (1-1) will play Eastern Michigan in the second round today at 4:00 p.m. EMU dropped an 87-58 decision to host Purdue in the earlier game Monday night.
