Kickoffs possible for Lindley in bowl game
Freshman kicker Blair Walsh put a pair of kickoffs out of bounds Saturday, and head coach Mark Richt mused about several possible solutions in his post game presser.
“We might have to go to Poland or something to find a guy that can kick it out of the end zone,” he said. “And give him two scholarships.”
Walsh’s kickoff to start the second half sailed out of bounds, setting up a one-play scoring drive for B-back Johnathan Dwyer and Georgia Tech.
On a more serious note, Richt said during his Sunday teleconference that walk-on Jamie Lindley has a chance of earning kickoff duty for the Bulldogs’ upcoming bowl game.
“I think that’s possible. I’m not going to say that that will happen but there’s a chance of that happening. There’s always competition,” he said. “We’ve got to get the ball in play where our guys can go cover it and know where it’s going to be.”
Walsh had several other short kickoffs against the Yellow Jackets, allowing the Jackets to start drives, on average, from their own 36-yard line. He has had some struggles on field goals as well, going 14-of-22 on the season.
Lindley has two kickoffs this season, one each in the South Carolina and Alabama games. While there may be a change as far as kickoff duties go, Richt said he was still confident in Walsh’s ability to fulfill his other responsibilities.
“I’m very comfortable with Blair as our extra point and field goal man, very comfortable,” he said.
“It’s just kickoffs have not really landed where we want them on a consistent basis.”
