QUARTER CAPS
First Quarter: Georgia 7-Tech 6
Georgia opened the game with the ball and wasted little time putting together its first scoring drive. The Bulldogs scored the game’s first touchdown when quarterback Matthew Stafford found tight end Tripp Chandler for a one-yard touchdown. Towards the end of the quarter Stafford threw an interception to Georgia Tech defensive back Morgan Burnett, who took the pick for six points. Georgia Tech’s extra point attempt failed after a bobbled snap kept the Yellow Jackets behind by one.
Second Quarter: Georgia 28-Tech 12
At the beginning of the second quarter, Stafford found wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi for a 10-yard touchdown which helped move Georgia up 14-6. On Georgia Tech’s next possession, the Yellow Jackets drove 65 yards down the field for a touchdown on a two-yard Lucas Cox toss sweep. Georgia Tech opted to attempt a two-point conversion but did not convert. Stafford hooked up with Massaquoi for two more touchdowns in the second quarter, the second one coming with only 36 seconds remaining in the half.
Third Quarter: Tech 38-Georgia 28
On Georgia Tech’s first play from scrimmage, Jonathan Dwyer ran 60 yards down the sideline and into the end zone. The Yellow Jackets went for two and made it, cutting Georgia’s lead to 28-20. After a Georgia three-and-out, Georgia Tech got the ball and continued to make Georgia pay on the ground. Georgia Tech scored on a toss sweep to Roddy Jones and went for two again. The Yellow Jackets picked up the conversion as quarterback Josh Nesbitt ran up the middle to tie the game. On the ensuing kickoff, Richard Samuel fumbled and Georgia Tech’s Marcus Wright recovered to give the Yellow Jackets the ball. On the next play, Dwyer ran for another touchdown, scoring from 23 yards out. Georgia Tech ended its third quarter scoring barrage with a 28-yard Scott Blair field goal.
Fourth Quarter: Tech 45-Georgia 42
Georgia’s offense responded early in the fourth quarter with a 32-yard rushing touchdown from running back Knowshon Moreno on a 4th-and-1. However, Georgia couldn’t stop Tech’s option attack as the Yellow Jackets drove back down the field, scoring on a 46-yard touchdown run from Roddy Jones on a key 3rd-and-7. Georgia responded with another touchdown, this time from Stafford to wide receiver A.J. Green with about four minutes left in the game. But it wasn’t enough as Georgia didn’t force the Yellow Jackets to punt. Georgia Tech nursed its lead and captured its first win in the series in eight years.
