SOUTHERN COMFORTS: making it stick, one wall at a time

It’s no surprise two art majors have a creative home, but to emulate the decorating tricks of Jessica Lee, a sophomore from Atlanta, and Emily Randall, a sophomore from Lindale, no bachelor’s degree is required.
When searching for furniture, the two suggest asking family first – they can be a gold mine. The girls have a chest for a coffee table, called a “hope chest,” which Randall’s great-uncle made.
“We didn’t do much shopping for furniture. A lot of our things came from my house. My mom’s, like, a clutter bug. I found tons of hidden treasures,” Randall said.
Their own furniture is “a bit of the old and new, homey furniture. It’s wooden and stuff, versus the loud walls,” Lee said.
Randall said their differences are evident in their furniture choices.
“It’s kind of cool how our rooms ended up. All of my furniture is wooden and traditional, whereas Jessica’s furniture is black and contemporary. It really says a lot about us. Traditional furniture is just more inviting to me because it’s what I grew up with . downstairs is a lot more rich … and upstairs is more vibrant,” Randall said.
Lee added: “I’m a lot more comfortable with the solid black. It makes me feel chic. Our stairway is probably the happiest place possible, color-wise.”
In addition to painting the hallways and bedrooms bright colors, the girls purchased unique wall decals for certain areas of their homes.
“We’ve got these weeds that are stuck on the wall between our rooms, and they really bring our rooms together because some of the weeds are the color of my room and some are the color of Emily’s room. Then there are a bunch of mixed colors,” Randall said.
“For Emily’s room, I got her these sheep and tally marks that can be easily removed and applied. They’re restickable! I thought she’d have a bunch of fun with those since she doesn’t sleep. And I’ve got 99 black balloons that are going in my room,” said Lee.
