Lady Dogs defeat Tennessee Tech despite messy play

The Georgia women’s basketball team beat Tennessee Tech University in a somewhat messy game Wednesday night.
The Lady Dogs defeated the Golden Eagles (1-6) 72-46 in Stegeman Coliseum.
This victory puts Georgia up 9-0 for the all-time series.
Georgia (7-1) looked sloppy during parts of the game, as it tied a season-high with 19 turnovers and only shot 42 percent from the free-throw line.
Despite the turnovers, head coach Andy Landers said after the game he liked his team’s tempo.
“I’m not upset tonight over turnovers,” Landers said. “We came out and played with great energy and with the speed that I want [our team] to play with. I’m not worried about free throws. We’re second in the league in free throws [and] it might just have something to do with who’s shooting them.”
Angela Puleo led all scorers with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting including 3-of-4 from behind the three-point line. Christy Marshall added 12 points and was just one rebound shy of a double-double.
“This season I feel that we have a team that could bring a lot of energy to the court,” Marshall said. “We feel like we are a running team, and I feel that that is part of my game to bring the energy to the team.”
Some of the turnover troubles the bulldogs faced could be attributed to early foul trouble by do-it-all point guard Ashley Houts who had to sit out more minutes than usual because of early foul trouble. Georgia would look for alternatives to run the offense for the Bulldogs, including Puleo.
“We need somebody to step in and play some minutes at the point,” Landers said. “[Puleo] did it some last year and [sophomore] Jaleesa [Rhoden] did it some last year, so tonight was a good night to get [Puleo] in there.”
The Lady Dogs were once again stout on the defensive side of the ball, holding the Golden Eagles to 26.7 percent shooting for the game. It marks the sixth time in eight games that Georgia has held its opponent under 35 percent shooting.
A part of that defensive prowess was junior Angel Robinson’s four blocks on the evening. With her four blocks, Robinson moved into ninth all-time at Georgia, with 103 total rejections in just more than two seasons of play.
The Lady Bulldogs will play rival Georgia Tech on Friday in Atlanta at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
