Super Six: Gym Dogs to watch for during the 2009 season

COURTNEY KUPETS
Year: Senior
Events: All-Around
What to look for: Kupets is a two-time NCAA all-around champion, and is ready for redemption after tearing her Achilles mid-season last year. She’s been landing on softer surfaces in practice and head coach Suzanne Yoculan said she’s still a little gunshy, but look for Kupets, who may be one of the best collegiate gymnasts ever, to have a huge senior campaign.
ABBY STACK
Year: Senior
Events: Bars, Floor
What to look for: Everyone asked during the preseason has pointed to Stack as the new leader of the Gym Dogs, a role she said she’s embraced. Look for Stack to help replace the void left by all-time Georgia points leader Katie Heenan, at least leadership-wise. The fact that she doesn’t compete in all four events should help her do that.
TIFFANY TOLNAY
Year: Senior
Events: All-Around
What to look for: Tolnay was beat up and injury-plagued for much of last season, but still managed to come away with four First-Team All-America honors (bars, beam, floor, all-around), giving her 12 for her Georgia career. If she’s back injury-free and at full speed in 2009, she could be the difference in the Gym Dogs’ quest for a fifth-straight national championship.
COURTNEY MCCOOL
Year: Junior
Events: Bars, Beam, Floor
What to look for: McCool comes back as the reigning NCAA individual on the floor exercise, but is truly talented in all three of her events. The 2008 First-Team All-American was SEC runner-up on both bars and beam last season. It’s possible she’ll miss the first couple of meets with a stress fracture in the navicular bone of her foot, but will be a key contributor upon her return.
GRACE TAYLOR
Year: Junior
Events: Bars, Beam, Floor
What to look for: Taylor was the SEC’s champion on bars and beam in 2008, and earned her first NCAA individual title on balance beam with a 9.95 at nationals, a year after finishing second as a freshman. The Aiken, S.C. native will look to match that success during the upcoming 2009 season, and improve upon her Second-Team All-America finish on floor exercise too.
CASSIDY MCCOMB
Year: Sophomore
Events: All-Around
What to look for: McComb had a fantastic freshman campaign last season as the first Georgia freshman to compete in all four events since 2006. McComb was a first-team All-American on floor and the SEC’s freshman of the Year, and Gym Dog fans can look for her to improve as she becomes even more comfortable in every event over the 2009 season.
