Lady Bulldogs fall to Georgia Tech 57-42

By on December 5, 2008

ATLANTA – Georgia head coach Andy Landers said “they were who we thought they were.”

Still, the Georgia women’s basketball fell to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 57-42, on Friday night in front of a crowd of 6,212, the second largest crowd at Alexander Memorial Coliseum since 1984. The loss marks just the second time the Lady Bulldogs’ have been defeated in their last 12 meetings in Atlanta.

Jaleesa Rhoden’s 13 points led the Lady Bulldogs scoring efforts and Danielle Taylor chipped in 12 as they came off the bench to provide the only bright spot in the evening for Georgia.

The Georgia starters only combined for a total of 12 points as the pesky Georgia Tech defense forced 23 turnovers. The Yellow Jackets frustrated Georgia with a full-court press that slowed the Lady Bulldogs’ offensive set. Though the press was effective, Landers did not believe that the press was the main cause of the turnovers.

“The turnovers were definitely a piece of it, but I doubt that five of them were against the press. Most of them were in the half-court where we fumbled around the basketball,” Landers said.

Adding to the frustration for the Lady Bulldogs was the discrepancy at the free-throw line. The Lady Yellow Jackets got to the stripe 23 more times and converted 17 more free-throws than Georgia.

“Defensively, at times, we did not do what we thought we were prepared to do. We ended up in precarious situations,” Landers said. “We don’t have that kind of quickness.”

Georgia’s travels only get tougher as they play the Rutgers Scarlet Knights Monday night in the Jimmy V Classic in Piscataway, NJ. The game is set for 7 PM and will be televised on ESPN2.
