Orange Crush

CHICAGO – If the first two games of the month are any indication, December could be a month that the Georgia men’s basketball team would quickly like to forget.

After losing a close game to Western Kentucky on Tuesday, Georgia looked to rebound against Illinois Saturday at the United Center in the first game of the December to Remember Classic. But instead, it got rolled 76-42 as Illinois finished the game on a 22-0 run.

“We just kind of died,” Georgia head coach Dennis Felton said. “We have a lot to talk about.”

And he wasn’t joking as he spend the better part of 40 minutes berating his team in the locker room.

“We are playing a lot of me ball,” guard Zac Swansey said.

The first half was certainly forgettable for the Dogs as the Illini jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead just three minutes into the game before extending it to 21-8 with 9:40 remaining.

Georgia, which in previous games ran strictly man-to-man, switched to a 1-3-1 zone forcing Illinois to make difficult cross-court passes.

Illinois shot 3-of-6 from 3-point range in the first, while Georgia shot a dismal 1-of-5.

A 10-2 Georgia run, sparked by Zac Swansey and Terrance Woodbury, brought Georgia to within five at 23-18 with 4:27 remaining in the first half. Illinois closed the half on a 7-2 run, and took a 30-23 lead into the intermission.

Georgia was lead offensively by Woodbury with 13 points, the only Georgia player with double-digit points

Georgia was once again dominated in the second half, something that is becoming a typical Georgia trend this season. The Illini jumped out to a 12-7 run, sparked by a couple of 3-pointers and never really looked back. They finished the game on a 22-0 run, and shot 69 percent in the second half including 6-of-10 from 3-points range.

Illinois got 14 points apiece from Mike Davis and Mike Tisdale and 11 from Dominique Keller as the Illini rebounded from a two-point loss to Clemson on Tuesday.
