Georgia diving finishes strong at Tennessee invite
Georgia diving concluded the three-day Tennessee Diving Invitational on Monday with a pair of solid performances at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center on the Tennessee campus.
Sophomore Hannah Moore and freshman Owen Blank were the lone performers for the Georgia diving squads and both turned quality efforts off the platform tower.
“Hannah did a pretty good job; she earned a personal best, which is encouraging,” diving coach Dan Laak said. “She is getting more comfortable and is getting better up there. Owen dove pretty well. Like Hannah, he is getting more comfortable on the tower and he is getting better. It shows how well we are progressing.”
Moore finished seventh in the 26-diver field with a career-best score of 223.45. Her previous high was a 217.20-point effort, which she earned at the UGA Fall Invitational earlier this year. Blank finished in 17th place in the field of 22 participants with a score of 215.70 points.
Monday’s platform competition capped a strong overall performance at the three-day invitational.
On Saturday, Moore finished third in the 3-meter springboard with a 312.40-point effort to lead the Lady Bulldogs. Moore moved up six spots from the morning preliminary round, where she placed ninth with a score of 274.15. Junior Lexie Bryant was the second-highest Georgia finisher off the 3-meter springboard with a score of 202.30, giving her a 38th place finish.
Freshman Landon Watters finished in 47th place with a score of 185.90.
Also on Saturday, senior Webb Worthington paced the Bulldogs with an eighth-place finish and 293.55-point effort in the finals of the 1-meter springboard competition. Sophomore Tim Barrett finished 19th with a score of 261.35. Blank rounded out the men’s effort in the 1-meter with a score of 219.05, which earned him 35th place for the Bulldogs.
On Sunday, Worthington led the Georgia effort with a 21st place finish off the 3-meter springboard with a score of 268.70. Barrett was the second-highest Bulldog finisher off the 3-meter, earning a score of 258.00 and a 25th place finish. Blank finished in 34th place with a score of 233.65 in the preliminary round.
For the women on Sunday, Moore finished fifth in the 1-meter springboard competition with a score of 265.20. Bryant narrowly missed qualifying for the afternoon finals after finishing 13th in the morning preliminary round with a score of 244.35. She was less than five points behind the 12th place finisher at the conclusion of the preliminary round. Freshman Landon Watters finished in 46th place with a score of 177.50.
“This is a fun meet,” Laak said. “It1s a good way to kick-start the second half of the season. Overall, we did a good job, did what we needed to do and got some experience in this pool, which is good because this is where the NCAA Zone Championships will be. It was a successful trip.”
The diving team will be back in action when Georgia hosts Texas at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Gabrielsen Natatorium. On Tuesday, however, the Georgia swim squads will face Southern Methodist at 1 p.m. in Dallas before rejoining the diving squads for Saturday’s home meet with Texas.
