Georgia faces off against Tech at spot of triumph

By on January 6, 2009

Georgia wraps up its pre-conference slate tonight against rival Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs (9-5) dropped an 83-76 decision at home to Missouri on Saturday.

Georgia Tech (8-5) shares many similarities Georgia. Georgia has played one other ACC foe: Va. Tech (W/67-66) while Ga. Tech has played a pair of SEC teams (won vs. Vanderbilt, loss at Alabama). Both teams split a pair of overtime contests. And both teams open their conference schedules this Saturday with noon tipoffs.

Georgia Tech leads this series 100-84. The Bulldogs won last year’s game 79-72, but Georgia’s last win over Georgia Tech in Atlanta was in 2000.

Nearly 10 months ago a different Georgia basketball team stood on the Alexander Memorial Coliseum floor in exaltation. Those Bulldogs made history by winning the 2008 SEC Tournament championship – just the second such title in school history – on that very court. They won three games there in a span of less than 30 hours, after a tornado had forced the SEC to move its tournament from the Georgia Dome three miles to the Tech campus.
