Swimmers sweep past SMU
The Georgia swimming teams showed their depth as both the men and women defeated host Southern Methodist Tuesday.
In addition to relay victories, six Lady Bulldog swimmers won six events for No. 1 Georgia en route to a 137.5-99.5 victory over the Mustangs. The scenario was similar for the Georgia men as the depth of the No. 11 Bulldogs allowed them to come away with a 140-101 decision.
“The kids did a great job today,” head coach Jack Bauerle said. “They were a little rough around the edges, but that’s to be expected. The first meet after Christmas is rough on them coming off a lot hard work and training. It’s a little bit hard on the kids, but sometimes that’s good for them. Sometimes when you’re a little harder and tougher on them, it makes them better. Both the men and women raced exceptionally well.”
For the Bulldogs (3-2), junior Troyden Prinsloo was the lone double-winner for the Bulldogs, taking top honors in the 1,000 free in 9:20.19 and 500 free in 4:34.12 Freshman Peter Benner won the 200 free in 1:41.96, while sophomore Mark Dylla won the 200 individual medley in 1:51.48, which was also the time turned in by freshman Todd McGraw in his victory in the 200 butterfly. Senior Neil Versfeld won the final individual event of the meet, winning the 200 breaststroke in 1:59.62. The men swam to victory in the 400 medley relay.
“Dylla, Troy and Neil all had strong meets, like they always do,” Bauerle said. “We depend on all of them and they all performed well today.”
For the Lady Bulldogs (5-0), freshman Wendy Trott scored the first individual victory of the day by winning the 1,000 freestyle in 9:56.32, followed by junior Anne-Marie Botek’s victory in the 50 freestyle in 23.58. Georgia then earned a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 individual medley, led by freshman Michelle McKeehan1s 2:01.11. Senior Aleksandra Putra then won the 200 backstroke with a 1:58.99. Kelsey Ditto won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:47.98. The women also earned victories in the 400 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
In her first meet swimming for the Georgia Lady Bulldogs, 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Allison Schmitt debuted with a convincing victory in the 200 yard freestyle, leading a Georgia sweep of the event, with a time 1:47.34.
“She couldn’t have been more excited,” Bauerle said. “I don’t know if that I had a kid more excited to swim in her first meet in my career, but it was exciting to see her do well. Michelle McKeehan had a good day, as did Mhyria Miller, and Morgan Scroggy has been a big lift for us this year.”
The Georgia men and women will be back in the pool next when they face the Texas Longhorns at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in the Ramsey Student Center. Admission to the event is free.
