Gym Dogs stumble to win over West Virginia
The Gym Dogs beat West Virginia by a large margin to open their season Friday, but didn’t look like the four-time defending national champions doing it.
They counted a fall on bars, beam and floor on the way to besting the Mountaineers 195.425-194.750, charting their lowest all-around team score since the 2005 NCAA Regional.
“It wasn’t pretty, and we have a long way to go,” head coach Suzanne Yoculan said.
Senior Courtney Kupets looked solid in her return from last year’s Achilles tear, with a 9.975 on bars and 9.950 on floor.
Freshmen Kathryn Ding and Gina Nuccio both made their Gym Dog debuts on bars with mixed success. Ding slipped and counted a 9.375, while Nuccio scored a 9.775.
The Gym Dogs return to action when they travel to LSU next Friday.
