Lady Dogs’ coach approaches lofty career milestone

Andy Landers is one step away from achieving a milestone that only four other Division I women’s basketball coaches before him have accomplished.
Eight hundred victories.
But, before the Georgia women’s basketball coach can celebrate number 800, he needed a big basket from his junior playmaker to save the day to get number 799. And Ashley Houts did not disappoint.
With the score tied at 63 with 1:10 remaining in the contest, Houts scored six straight points to help lead Georgia (10-6, 1-1 SEC) to a 69-63 victory over South
Carolina (8-7, 0-2 SEC) on Sunday afternoon, snapping a three-game losing streak.
The point guard from Trenton drove through two defenders before hoisting a lay-up that kissed the top of the backboard and bounced in for a 65-63 Georgia lead.
After Christy Marshall drew a charge on South Carolina’s Lakeisha Sutton on the ensuing Gamecock possession, Houts sealed the win with two clutch free-throws.
“It’s very exciting to be a part of right now. It’s a great confidence booster,” Houts said. “We’re just going to try to build on what we did tonight to get ready for the next team.”
Porsha Phillips and Angel Robinson led Georgia in scoring with 14 apiece, and Houts scored 13 and dished a career-high nine assists for the Lady Dogs.
