Landers nears milestone win

Andy Landers is about to join a group of very distinguished women.
With a victory Thursday night against Savannah State, Lady Bulldogs coach Andy Landers would join Pat Summitt, Jody Conradt, C. Vivian Stringer and Sylvia Hatchell as the only women’s basketball coaches to reach 800 wins.
Landers, who’s won 717 of his 799 victories at Georgia, began his illustrious career at Roane State in Tennessee in 1975. Since then, he’s won eight SEC titles and one SEC tournament championship. Here’s how Landers stacks up against the ladies who have won more than 800 games.
SYLVIA HATCHELL
Hatchell is the newest member to the 800-win club, getting her milestone win just Sunday. During her 23 years at North Carolina, Hatchell has won a national championship and six ACC titles. She’s also claimed six 30-win seasons and 25 20-win campaigns, ranking her fifth nationally. She’s already a Hall-of-Famer, too.
C. VIVIAN STRINGER
Stringer is a program builder. She’s made her name at Rutgers, but her 812 wins have come at three different schools. Stringer got her start at Cheyney University before becoming the first coach, men’s or women’s, to take three different programs to the Final Four (Cheyney in 1982, Iowa in 1993 and Rutgers in 2000 and 2007).
JODY CONRADT
This Longhorn legend racked up 900 wins, which ranks second in women’s basketball history to only Pat Summitt. Conradt won a national championship at Texas in 1986 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998. Conradt retired in 2007 at the age of 65, saying leadership needed to change to make Texas a winner again.
PAT SUMMITT
Summitt owns women’s college basketball. Her 995 wins are the most in both the men’s and women’s game, as she chases history of her own to be the first coach to win 1,000 college basketball games.
Summitt has brought Tennessee eight national championships, including the last two, and produced a slew of All-Americans.
