Museum screens Hitchcock classic
The master of suspense is now in Athens. Or at least his films are.
The Georgia Museum of Art hosts the first of its Classic Film Series: Hitchcock this Wednesday.
The series will highlight the works of Alfred Hitchcock, beginning with tomorrow night’s premiere showing of “39 Steps.”
The series is in coordination with a graduate-level seminar, “The Art of Alfred Hitchcock,” which is taught by art history professor, Dr. Janice Simon.
“‘Hitchcock’ is an adjective, he’s not just a person,” Simon said.
Simon will give a brief introduction at the beginning of each film showing.
Simon can also take credit for organizing the series with the museum.
39 STEPS
When: 7 p.m. Wednesday
Where: Georgia Museum of Art
Price: Free
“The museum said they would be open to a film series,” Simon said. “[And] the films work well with my seminar.”
In addition, Simon chose Hitchcock works that she felt were lesser-known than the classic suspense thrillers like “Psycho.”
“’39 Steps,’ many critics claim, is Hitchcock’s first true hit,” Simon said.
“39 Steps” follows the escapades of a man falsely blamed of murdering a woman he recently met and his attempt to find the real killers.
Though one of his earlier works, “39 Steps” still includes many typical Hitchcock elements, Simon said.
“[Hitchcock] essentially started the [thriller/horror] genre in the way he sets up ways of suspense,” Simon said.
Simon expects 50-60 people to be at the event, including the 13 participants in her seminar.
“Thirteen is Hitchcock’s favorite number; it’s my own little joke.”
