Georgia swimmers earn SEC honors
Three Georgia swimmers earned weekly accolades by the Southeastern Conference office Tuesday for their efforts in Georgia’s meets against Southern Methodist and Texas last week.
Neil Versfeld was named the SEC Swimmer of the Week and Todd McGraw was named SEC Freshman of the Week for the men, while Wendy Trott was named SEC Freshman of the Week for the women.
It is the first time earning the weekly award for Versfeld, who had a successful week in the pool for the No. 11 Bulldogs. Last week against Southern Methodist, Versfeld swam to victory in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 1:59.62 and was a part of the first place 400 medley relay team. On Saturday against No. 1 Texas, Versfeld was the only Bulldog to win two events as he earned victories in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 54.21 and the 200 breaststroke in 1:56.67. Versfeld holds the conference’s top time in both breaststroke distances.
The honor for McGraw is the first of his career. He was a steady performer for the Bulldogs against Southern Methodist and Texas. Against SMU last week, McGraw finished first in the 200 butterfly in 1:51.48 and helped one of Georgia’s 400 medley relays to a third place finish. Against Texas, McGraw improved his 200 butterfly time by more than two seconds in a third place time of 1:49.07. He also took fourth in the 400 individual medley in 4:02.74. McGraw currently holds the fourth-fastest time in the SEC in the
400 IM.
Trott earned freshman of the week honors for the fourth time this season after several first place efforts against Southern Methodist and Texas. Against Southern Methodist, Trott finished first in the 1,000 freestyle in 9:56.32 and was second in the 500 free. On Saturday against Texas, Trott finished first in two events for the No. 1 Lady Bulldogs in their 159-141 win against No. 3 Texas; the win was the Lady Bulldogs’ 65th straight home
dual meet victory.
Trott was the lone double-winner for Georgia, winning the 1,000 free in 9:38.80 and the 500 free in 4:43.68 against the Longhorns. Her 1,000 freestyle time against Texas is the top time in the SEC. She also owns the top conference mark in the 500 and 1,650 freestyle.
Georgia’s next chance in the water will be Jan. 24 when the men and women face Tennessee.
