Martinez leading candidate to fill defensive vacancy in Miami

By on January 21, 2009

For all the Georgia fans demanding for defensive coordinator Willie Martinez’s dismissal, they may get their wish.

But not in the manner they expected.

On Tuesday, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy announced that former Miami defensive coordinator Bill Young had accepted the same position with the Cowboys, leaving a vacant position in Coral Gables.

And the leading candidate for the position at Miami is said to be Martinez.

Miami head coach Randy Shannon is expected to have a serious interest in the former Miami defensive back and graduate assistant, according to the Miami Herald.

Martinez has been on the Georgia staff since 2001, starting as the secondary coach under Brian Van Gorder before taking over the defensive coordinator position in 2005.

Defensive tackle, receiver to play in 2009 Senior Bowl

Irvin and Massaquoi will be two of 22 SEC players to play in the game’s 60th edition.

In two years after transferring from Georgia Military College, Irvin made 46 tackles and 31 quarterback hurries in 25 games.

Massaquoi, a native of Charlotte, N.C., concluded his four-year career at Georgia ranked fourth in career receiving yards (2,282) and pass receptions (158).

He started all 13 games, recording 58 receptions for 920 yards and eight touchdowns.
