The No. 16 Georgia softball team defeated UNC-Greensboro 12-2 on Sunday afternoon to win the 2009 Georgia Softball Classic, going 5-0 in the tournament.

“I told [the team] good job and I was proud of them for the entire weekend, especially our hitting in all of the games,” head coach Lu Harris-Champer said.

Sophomore pitcher Taylor Schlopy earned the win against UNC-Greensboro on a solid outing for the Bulldogs. Schlopy (2-0) gave up three hits and one earned run on five innings of work, and struck out five batters.

Left fielder Megan Wiggins highlighted the offensive affair with a 3-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, scoring shortstop Kristin Schnake and third baseman Alisa Goler.

The shot to right-center gave her a home run in three straight games, and five home runs on the season.

The second inning was headlined by UNC-Greensboro errors in which Georgia took advantage. After Goler hit a ball that was dropped in right field, three runs crossed the plate for the Bulldogs. Later on, Georgia would score on a throwing error after Lisaira Daniels’ RBI single, making the game 9-0.

Georgia would hold the lead throughout, scoring more runs in the third and fourth innings.

“We are going to have to keep up our mental confidence and toughness going forward from here – and really just trust in their training,” Harris-Champer said.

Georgia scored 59 runs in the five games, with Goler and Wiggins accounting for three home runs each and a collective 29 RBIs.

Goler now has nine home runs on the season – merely seven shy of the Georgia single-season record of 16 set back in 2005.

Pitchers Christie Hamilton and Sarah McCloud each logged two wins apiece during the weekend, with Hamilton not giving up a single earned run through 10 innings of work.

Georgia won the Georgia Softball Classic by beating Ball State, Tennessee State, Marshall and IUPUI earlier in the tournament.
