Students in CORE, a modern dance company, rehearse on Feb. 15 for their upcoming show.

If people discovered a professional modern dance company existed on campus, they might be surprised.

If people knew this company was comprised of a unique group of students who execute artistry and movement in a style comparable to that of Cirque Du Soleil, they may be shocked.

Being a member of the CORE dance company is just that – an exceptional group of students, hand picked for their rare and outstanding talent to dance and perform at a professional level.

“It’s a very good company this year,” said Bala Sarasvati, director of CORE.

The annual CORE concert always has been a show that displays amazing feats and remarkable dancing, and this year will be no exception.

Expect to see members twisting, falling, leaping and flying on objects such as silks, lyre (large metal rings) and each other.

CORE CONCERT DANCE COMPANY

What: Spring Collection 2009
When: Today to Saturday
Where: New Dance Theatre, Dance Building
Cost: $10 students/ $15 non-students

The show will have a mixture of new and old. Some new pieces will debut, CORE alumni will make appearances and new members will take the stage for the first time.

“There are two new pieces we have created as a company,” Sarasvati said. “‘Rio De Generated’ is a six-part piece. Then ‘A Vision of Student Learning.’ … [It is] based on the forward thinking of this ‘now’ culture of learning,” she said. “[It references] ideas about YouTube, Facebook, MySpace.”

The members were excited to create and work with all the contemporary themes.

Senior dance major Jennifer Plesher is notably excited for the show; she has been a member for four years- a rare feat.

“I’m getting to do a dance I did my first year,” Plesher said. “It’s interesting to see how I’ve developed in the piece . It’s different for me now than it was three years ago.”

After much rehearsing, the group is now anxious to show Athens what it has worked so hard for.

“We love what we’re doing. We’re ready to unfold,” Sarasvati said. “It’s a joy to work with them.”
