Food Fight – The Ultimate Food Fight

By on February 26, 2009

Taste of Athens is one of the most anticipated annual events in the Athens food community and beyond. Held at the Classic Center downtown, nearly 50 restaurants and cafés participate, and just over a dozen beverage vendors provide samples as well.

The highlight of the event had to be Dondero’s Kitchen, which offers catering, groceries and in-house dining with a twist; they change their menu weekly, featuring authentic dishes from different countries and regions. Other noteworthy vendors included La Dolce Vita, which featured hand-made gnocchi, and The National, which featured a tasty cucumber shrimp gazpacho. Among these were a handful of other memorable participants like The Daily Neighborhood Deli and Thai Spoon, who presented multiple samples from their menu.

Nevertheless, a few disappointments scattered the Classic Center. Farm 255 didn’t quite hit the jackpot with their fancy sausage buns. While it’s quite unique that they raise and slaughter the pigs themselves, their tidbit about naming said pigs is likely to make anyone’s stomach churn. And really, this event probably could’ve gone without showcasing The Grill.

By and large, Taste of Athens is a special event that deserves a visit at some point in time, especially for those over 21 that have the luxury of sampling beers and wines. The only downside, however, is the potential waste of uneaten food – a no no in times of environmental and economic conservation.
