Grand slam lifts Georgia in win

Two feet was all that stood in the way of a second grand slam for Georgia catcher Bryce Massanari in the Diamond Dogs’ 11-4 victory over Presbyterian College at Foley Field Wednesday.
Following an intentional walk to Georgia junior first baseman Rich Poythress to load the bases in the eighth inning, Massanari strode to the plate looking for not only his first, but his second grand slam of the afternoon.
After a long battle with Presbyterian (0-5) pitcher Andrew Foushee, Massanari hit a drifting fly ball to deep right field, but was caught at the base of the wall by Blue Hose right fielder Jesse Harmon.
“I just missed it,” Massanari said. “I got under it a bit.”
No. 12 Georgia (5-0) opened its scoring in the bottom of the third when shortstop Michael Demperio led off the inning with a home run to left-center field. Presbyterian starter Garrett Moore then walked the bases loaded before being replaced by reliever and former Diamond Dog Mitchell Odom. After striking out Poythress, Massanari stepped up and jumped all over an Odom fastball, hitting his first career grand slam.
It was also the first grand slam for Georgia since Demperio hit one last season.
Freshman right fielder Chase Davidson came mere feet from a grand slam in the eighth, as well, as his shot to deep center hit the top of the wall, plating three runs to extend Georgia’s lead to the final margin of 11-4.
The Diamond Dogs received another quality pitching performance, this time from Jason Leaver (1-0), who allowed two runs over five innings to earn the victory.
“I was pretty proud of myself today because I was just throwing strikes,” Leaver said.
