By on February 26, 2009

Georgia’s Peter Benner and Allison Schmitt earned Southeastern Conference Freshmen of the Year honors and Lisa Caprioglio was named the SEC Female Scholar-Athlete Award winner.

Additionally, 10 Lady Bulldogs and six Bulldogs were named as First or Second Team All-SEC selections based on their performances at last weekend’s SEC Swimming and Diving Championships.

For the women, Anne-Marie Botek, Schmitt, Morgan Scroggy and Wendy Trott were named First Team All-SEC selections by way of their event championships during the weekend. Second Team All-SEC honors were awarded to Jessica Cole, Michelle McKeehan, Kelly McNichols, Mhyria Miller, Chelsea Nauta and Aleksandra Putra for their runner-up efforts.

On the men’s side, Mark Dylla, Troyden Prinsloo and Neil Versfeld won First Team All-SEC honors. Benner, Craig Jennings and Chris Spooner were named Second Team All-SEC members.

Benner was one of Georgia’s most consistent performers during the weekend meet, scoring 27 individual points for the Bulldogs.

He advanced to the evening finals in three events, including a second place finish in the 400 individual medley and swims in the consolation finals of the 200 individual medley and 200 butterfly.

Benner holds Georgia’s top times in the 200 freestyle and 400 individual medley and is second in the 200 individual medley, and was once named SEC Male Freshman of the Week.

“Peter Benner has been a great surprise for us,” head coach Jack Bauerle said. “We knew he was a very good swimmer, but that has come faster than we imagined, and that is to his credit. His dad is a heck of a coach. He has prepared him well. ”

Schmitt finished with 51 points for the Lady Bulldogs and scored in three individual events in her first SEC Championship experience.

She led a Georgia sweep of the 500 freestyle, was second in the 200 freestyle and earned fifth in the 100 freestyle. She was also part of the 400 and 800 freestyle relay teams that each finished second.

In leading off the women’s 800 free relay team, her 200 freestyle split of 1:42.90 set a new school and SEC meet record.
