Swimmers face last-chance meet
After regrouping from a strenuous SEC championship meet, both Georgia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will have one final shot at qualifying swimmers for the NCAA championships this weekend in the Bulldog Last Chance meet.
Rather than racing top swimmers from the SEC, the Bulldogs must rely on each other in pushing themselves to faster times. Often, swimmers compete fastest when facing the highest level of competition, as exhibited by all of the records broken by the Bulldogs this past weekend at SECs.
Without scoring and opposing teams present, the only real motivation is swimming a faster time to make the qualifying cut.
“This meet coming up is a very important meet in a few ways,” head coach Jack Bauerle said. “We may have a chance to qualify a few more swimmers for the NCAA meet, we have a chance to find a little bit more about some of the kids that will help us next year and it keeps us race ready for the NCAA championships. We are hoping to add one or two more swimmers to the field.”
Although it is not required to have an NCAA cut to be invited to the national championship meet, a qualifying time guarantees a spot at the event. The No. 1 Lady Bulldogs (9-0, 5-0) already have four relays and 10 swimmers qualified, with five swimmers qualified in more than one event. The No. 12 Bulldogs (5-4, 2-3) have qualified three swimmers already and look to finish the season strong at the NCAA championships with the help of those who can qualify this weekend.
