Track squads to make run at SECs
The Georgia track and field team will compete this weekend in the 2009 SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Kentucky.
The men’s side is ranked No. 13 heading into the weekend, while the women enter the tournament unranked.
“So far it has been a pretty uneventful indoor season, but this weekend is the one where you put all of your eggs in one basket and try to do the best you can,” head coach Wayne Norton said. The SEC tournament presents three goals for those competing: improve on your previous best times, try to reach a qualifying time for the NCAA tournament and contend in your event to earn points for your team. Last season, the men’s team finished fifth in the tournament. The women finished 10th last year, above only Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.
“Based on the times so far, we are looking at finishing right around those positions again this year – with anything above being a nice improvement,” Norton said. “We understand that the women’s side is still a work in progress, but the men have a very solid team and have a shot at the top 3.” Norton expects to be most competitive in the men’s 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash and 4×400-meter relay – highlighted by senior Justin Gaymon and freshman Torrin Lawrence. The Georgia men have never won an SEC Indoor Championship, and have finished in second place only once – back in 1982. The women’s highest-ever finish at the indoor tournament was in 2006 when they won the SEC Indoors.
