Diamond Dogs off to best start in school history
Trevor Holder held Quinnipiac hitless and recorded seven strikeouts in seven innings to lead Georgia to a 7-0 win over Quinnipiac Friday at Foley Field. With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 10-0, the best start in school history, surpassing the 9-0 start by the 1911 team.
Holder allowed just three base runners, all on walks, and picked up his third win of the season. Dean Weaver pitched the final two innings, and the Bobcats (0-4) didn’t record a base hit until Ben Farina’s single with one out in the ninth. They added another two batters later and finished the game with just two hits.
“Trevor was great tonight,” said head coach David Perno. “It is the worst decision that a coach has to make taking him out like that, but his pitch count was getting high. I’m just proud of him and extremely excited for him. He stepped up tonight and allowed us to rest our bullpen.”
Colby May went 3-for-4 with four RBI to lead Georgia offensively. The freshman from Guyton, Ga., was a triple shy of the cycle.
Another freshman, Johnathan Taylor added two hits and scored three runs. He had three stolen bases, just one shy of the school record set by Rodney Bellamy against Westminster in 1980.
Georgia scored in the first inning for the fifth straight game as Taylor led off with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on an error, then scored on an infield single by May to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs added three more runs in the fifth when Michael Demperio belted a solo home run to center for Georgia’s second run of the game. After another single by Taylor, May hit his team-leading fifth home run to push the lead to 4-0.
“Demperio’s home run was huge tonight and we really needed it at the time,” Perno said. “It allowed our guys to loosen up in the dugout and relax at the plate. Colby had a very strong night, and it was great to see him drive the ball to all fields.”
Georgia scored three two-out runs in the seventh to take a 7-0 lead. Taylor reached for the third time on a single and Matt Cerione walked to put runners at first and second. May laced a double to left field that scored Taylor, then Cerione crossed the plate on a wild pitch. May came around to score on a double by Bryce Massanari.
Chris Gloor (0-1) allowed three earned runs in 5.0 innings to take the loss for Quinnipiac.
It was Holder’s 18th career win, which moves the senior into a tie for 10th all-time in school history.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 3 p.m. with sophomore righthander Justin Grimm scheduled to start for Georgia.
