A University of Georgia student in Florida for spring break was arrested Tuesday after shooting himself in the foot following an altercation with beachgoers who insulted him, according to a police report.

Amar Yakhou, a first-year economics major from Milledgeville, told St. John’s County Sheriff’s deputies a group of guys were harassing him and his girlfriend at the Cabana Club on Ponte Vedra Beach because they were from Georgia.

The group followed Yakhou to a parking lot, where he pulled out a shotgun from his 2005 Mazda “to scare them away,” the report states. He went back to the beach to get his girlfriend. When they returned, as he was moving the gun from the back seat to the trunk, it went off and he suffered a gunshot wound to one of his left toes.

After the incident, a witness said the group of guys walked by and told Yakhou that it was their beach, laughing while saying he got what he deserved, the report states.

Yakhou faces an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge and was released from St. Johns County jail Wednesday on $3,000 bail.
