After the No. 7 Georgia softball team defeated No. 20 LSU 6-5 in Game 1 of a doubleheader Saturday, rain forced the cancellation of Games 2 and 3 Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

Sophomores Taylor Schlopy and Megan Wiggins led the Bulldogs (16-4, 1-2 SEC) to victory in Game 1, the Bulldogs’ first SEC home contest this season. Schlopy went 3-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs, and Wiggins went 1-for-2 with a home run and three runs-batted in.

Sophomore Sarah McCloud earned the victory to go to 8-1 on the year after working 6.2 innings, and senior Christie Hamilton struck out the final Tiger batter to pick up her first save of the season.

Georgia and LSU (15-6, 2-2 SEC) completed three innings in Game 2 before rain stopped play during the top of the fourth.

Georgia led 4-2 after three innings, but LSU had picked up one run in the fourth frame to make it 4-3 and had the bases loaded with one out when play was halted. Schlopy started Game 2 in the circle for Georgia, but the Bulldogs had turned to Hamilton in the middle of the fourth. Brittany Mack started and pitched the first three innings for the Tigers.

Two All-Americans on track team

Georgia track and field completed the NCAA Indoor Championships in a tie for 53rd place with two All-Americans on Saturday in College Station, Texas.

Senior Justin Gaymon earned the fifth All-America certificate of his career after finishing ninth in the 400-meter dash since the event’s winner, Wake Forest’s Michael Bingham, is a foreign student-athlete. All-American honors are given to the top 8 finishers, but foreign athletes don’t receive the award.

As a team, the Bulldogs scored two points to tie with four other teams for 53rd place. Oregon (54 points) cruised to the men’s title after topping Florida (36) by 18 points. Tennessee (42) edged Texas A&M (37) to capture the women’s team championship.

Gaymon, who was the 16th and final sprinter chosen for the meet’s field, registered a time of 46.89 to take ninth in the finals.

On Friday, Torrin Lawrence, who was named the USTFCCCA Men’s South Region Track Athlete of the Year earlier this week, took seventh overall the 200 finals with a finish of 20.90 for Georgia’s only points. Lawrence and Gaymon’s All-America certificates gave the Bulldogs 10 straight years with at least one of the honors.

Diver earns berth to NCAAs

Hannah Moore was the lone Georgia diver during Sunday’s platform competition, the final event of the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships held at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center on the University of Tennessee campus.

Moore finished 13th in Sunday’s platform with a combined preliminary and final score of 415.50. She finished the preliminary round in 13th place with a score of 204.05.

Moore qualified for the NCAA Championships earlier this weekend in the springboard competitions. At the national meet, she will participate in the 1-meter competition on Thursday, the 3-meter on Friday and the platform competition on Saturday.

Moore will join the Lady Bulldogs at this week’s NCAA Championships, which begin Thursday and will run through Saturday on the campus of Texas A&M University. The men’s NCAA Championships will begin March 26.
