Parking Services should utilize warning system

I understand that Parking Services faces an enormous logistical problem during the fall and spring semesters with so many people wanting to park in so few spaces.

However, I still do not understand why parking rules continue to be enforced so stringently during student breaks, such as Spring Break, when campus buses are not running. Faculty members certainly need a place to park as well, but why not at least open more lots for students who need to go to their on-campus job – and not just the four decks that are open for select students who happen to learn about and register for the ATP program before the break?

Furthermore, why not implement a one-strike policy where first-time offenders get a warning? I always will remember walking by the Legion Field lot last summer and seeing a disappointed family examining their orange ticket. They were here for orientation – what a welcome, right?

It is not the fine that bothered them, I’m sure; it’s that an exciting weekend was dampened by a school-sanctioned reprimand. Is that really how we want to treat new students and their families?
