Broadway veterans to perform in Athens

As the composer behind “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Cats” and “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Andrew Lloyd Webber is to Broadway musicals what Alfred Hitchcock is to suspenseful filmmaking – a pioneer, a genius and a legend.

This Friday night, four Broadway veterans will present the highlights of this prolific songwriter’s collection as part of the touring series, The Best of Broadway: The Songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber.

“We tried to hit all of those big giant musicals and create them as if they were coming from the show,” said Raymond Saar, the show’s director and a performer. “You can close your eyes, and it’s like you’re sitting there.”

Saar, who has performed in major productions of “Les Miserables” and “Phantom of the Opera,” founded The Best of Broadway tours and its parent company, ETC Entertainment, in 1995. The business serves as a means to work on his own time and focus on his family.

“I had a little girl that I wanted to have a life with and still enjoy my profession. This way, I could pick and choose the things I wanted to do,” he said. In creating the Andrew Lloyd Webber show, Saar strung together the most celebrated selections from the composer’s over 40-year career.

“The hardest thing about putting the show together is trying to figure out what songs not to use,” he said. “He’s one of the most prolific songwriters. At one time, he had five shows [playing] in London and three in New York City.”

Moving chronologically through Webber’s works, Saar decided to feature some of the British-born composer’s lesser-known works such as a discarded duet from “The Starlight Express” as well as the most recognizable hits from “Phantom of the Opera” and “Evita.”

“Within this two hours, you get the best songs of the best musicals in the last 20 years of Broadway,” Saar said. “It’s an emotional roller-coaster, from super funny highs to poignant moments such as ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina.’”

Also joining Saar onstage is his wife, Diane Ketchie, who performed in the Broadway debut of “Phantom of the Opera.” Valerie Perri, who has toured nationally as Eva Peron from “Evita,” and Scott Harlan round out the rest of the troupe.

Accompanied by the vocal stylings of these other Broadway heavy hitters, Saar hopes to dazzle audiences with the cream of the musical theater crop.

“How can you miss when you have some the biggest shows of Broadway, and out of those shows, we’re singing the blockbuster songs?” Saar said.
