Diamond Dogs hold on, complete three-game sweep of Tennessee
After two offensive explosions on Friday and Saturday, the top-ranked Georgia baseball team had to rely on – and hope for – strong pitching in the series finale against Tennessee.
And the Diamond Dogs (22-3, 7-2 SEC) got it from sophomore Justin Grimm and the bullpen in their 4-3 win Sunday to sweep the Volunteers (11-15, 1-8 SEC) at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn.
The game was not devoid of drama as Tennessee loaded the bases with one out in the ninth inning with the Dogs clinging to a one-run lead. But closer Dean Weaver struck out the final two batters for his fourth save to seal the victory and second straight sweep over SEC competition.
“That’s what you call just enough,” Georgia head coach David Perno said in a release. “Dean got the outs when he had to, and he is a stud in those moments. Offensively, we found the value of big innings and hitting the long ball. Grimm gave us a great start. You don’t get an opportunity to sweep on the road very often. They had a lot of fortunate hits but things worked out and we have a lot of momentum with the toughest week of the year coming up.”
Grimm scattered five hits and struck out six over 5.1 innings to improve to 2-1 for the year.
For the offense, which scored 23 runs combined in the first two games, managed only four runs on five hits. All of the runs came in the fourth: two on a Joey Lewis home run, another on a passed ball that scored Colby May and the last came on a bases-loaded walk issued to Rich Poythress, which brought home Levi Hyams. Despite seeing his 14-game hit streak snapped, Poythress had a whale of a weekend going 6-for-10 with four home runs and 10 RBIs.
“Rich is officially hot,” Perno said on Saturday. “He’s on fire right now and I tip my hat to him. We have needed every bit of it this weekend. It’s hard to find a better complete hitter.”
