Women’s tennis gets revenge with thrashing of Arkansas

By on March 30, 2009

The Georgia women’s tennis team had one thing on their mind heading into its match Sunday against Arkansas.

Revenge.

After dropping two of their three meetings against Arkansas last year, the Bulldogs (15-2, 5-1 SEC) responded with a 6-1 thrashing over Arkansas (9-5, 4-2 SEC) on a windy Sunday afternoon in Athens. With the win, the Bulldogs continued their unblemished mark at home moving to 9-0 on the season at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Clinching the match for Georgia was sophomore Cameron Ellis, who defeated Razorback freshman Kate Lukomskaya 6-3, 6-3.

“It was nice to get [this] win. Every year is a different year,” head coach Jeff Wallace said. “I don’t want to look too much about last year. This is about this year. And, this puts us into the driver’s seat for the regular season title, but a lot of work has to be done.”

The Razorbacks, which were without the services of No. 68 ranked singles player Anouk Tigu, had to forfeit one singles match and one doubles match. Still, they pushed Georgia to the brink of defeat at the doubles point. The 30th-ranked freshman duo of Chelsey Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist were defeated for only the second time this season, falling to Ela Kaluder and Aurelija Miseviciute 8-4.

With Georgia’s veteran doubles team of senior Monika Dancevic and junior Yvette Hyndman trailing 7-3 at the 2-doubles position, it appeared Georgia would head into singles play trailing 1-0. But, behind the scrappy play of the two most experienced players on the team, Dancevic and Hyndman rallied to win six straight games to take the match 9-7 over Lukomskaya and Nanar Airapetian.

“In the beginning, I don’t think we necessarily played bad,” Dancevic said. “We just weren’t putting the balls away that we should have been putting away, especially a lot of volleys at the net. Yvette was saying, ‘Just one point at a time, one point at a time,’ and that’s the way we were thinking about it.”

Added Wallace: “It was a great comeback. These guys are fighters and they want to win even in tough conditions.”
