UGA Today
15th Annual James C. Cantrell Lecture: Mathematics and the Diversity of Cultures. Sponsored by the Department of Mathematics. Fields Medalist David Mumford, professor of applied mathematics at Brown University, gives the talk. Mumford discusses that by looking at the cultures of China, India and the West, one can “replay” the history of math from three different starting points. Sometimes one finds that it developed with strong parallels but with deep differences. Mumford will use the development of five mathematical ideas in these different cultures. 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. 102 Miller Learning Center. Contact lorenzin@uga.edu
