Equestrian takes nationals
The Georgia Equestrian team won its second consecutive national championship Saturday, trampling the competition.
The Bulldogs totaled 51 points, nine ahead of runner-up Texas A&M at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships.
This title marked the fourth championship in the seven-year history of the program.
“We’ve established ourselves as a premier program that is going to be in those championships every year, at least vying for them,” said Georgia coach Meghan Boenig. “I expect more championships to come, with athletic support from the new facility we’re about to build. I really don’t see us fading away anytime soon.”
Junior Haylie Jayne won the national individual championship, the first of her career.
“She not only brings it academically, but in the arena she is an incredibly consistent rider,” Boenig said. “She’s very outspoken, helping with her teammates. In this particular championships we competed with three freshmen. Her composure, talents and ability really made this championship that much more successful.”
Georgia senior Kelley Cowperthwait finished second in the individual standards. Freshmen Emma Lipman, Katie Hagerty and Michelle Morris were also winners in the championship round.
“I think we knew going in by the rankings in each discipline that we were expected to win the overall title,” Boenig said. “Texas A&M of course is a huge rival and a very strong Western team.”
Twelve hours before the championship was secured, the Bulldogs found themselves in a struggle with South Carollina for the right to advance. Georgia faced elimination, but rallied with two fences wins for a 3-2 victory.
“It was extremely close,” Boenig said. “It was by far the toughest ride, and it really felt like a championship ride. [Sophomore] Kacy Jenkins helped clinch the last ride for us, to secure the win, and move on to the championships.”
