Men’s tennis team named No. 4 seed for NCAA Tournament
Turning 21 and gearing up for an NCAA Tournament: Men’s tennis player Jamie Hunt’s life couldn’t be any better.
“Life is good right now. Life is very good,” Hunt said. “It was my 21st [birthday] yesterday. It was definitely one of the best days of the year for me.”
Hunt celebrated his birthday the day before the NCAA Tournament seeds and host sites were released. But he also received a special birthday cake from his team Tuesday, as the Bulldogs found out they were named the No. 4 seed and host of a regional – gathering together to watch ESPNews at Buffalo’s Cafe. Georgia’s opponent in the first round will be South Carolina State on May 8.
“I’m excited because we got a 4-seed. It says a lot about what these guys have accomplished this year,” said head coach Manuel Diaz. “We’ll have to find out a little bit more about [South Carolina State]. We know that they’ve done a tremendous job getting that program going, and winning their conference. We’ll have UNC-Wilmington and Virginia Tech, so it will challenge us as well if we get through the first round.”
With almost two full weeks to prepare for South Carolina State, the Bulldogs have put their SEC Tournament semifinal loss to Tennessee behind them, and have focus their minds on victories and trophies.
“We just need to tighten things up, and play with a little less fear. We’re playing great right now, so we’re not too worried about it,” Hunt said. “We need to focus on each match as if it was our last match and leaving everything out on the court. If we do that, then no matter what happens, we’re going to be happy with how we played and how we fought.”
