Women’s tennis hopes to update replay
Posted outside the Georgia’s women’s tennis team’s locker room is a small flat-screen television.
The TV plays ESPN’s coverage of the championship point of the Bulldogs’ triumph over Stanford in the 2000 NCAA Championships on a continuous loop.
Head coach Jeff Wallace, who was the engineer behind the only two team titles in 1994 and 2000, admitted he occasionally takes a peek at the TV.
“One thing is for sure, it would be nice to update all that,” Wallace said. “Put that one somewhere else and get a new one put there.”
The Bulldogs haven’t reached the Final Four of the NCAA Championships since 2002 and in the last two seasons, the Bulldogs left with dreams unanswered. But junior Yvette Hyndman has reason to believe things may be a little different this year.
“After winning three SEC championships three years in a row, I think, as a team, we are all ready to win an NCAA title,” Hyndman said.
Freshman Chelsey Gullickson, said she received some words of wisdom about her first NCAA Tournament from assistant coach and former player Kelley Hyndman.
“Kelley told me after NCAA’s, its over. If you don’t step it up this week and practice hard and if you don’t take it seriously to NCAAs, it’s done,” Gullickson said. “That’s what we work toward this whole season is NCAAs. If we go out there not focused and we lose, then it’s done”
Georgia’s first round opponent is South Carolina State and for the next week, the Bulldogs still will see continuous replays of the 2000 championship.
But, the players dream that maybe one day the team will get to watch themselves on the TV monitor.
“I think it would be fun to have our own video up there,” Yvette Hyndman said.
Added Gullickson: “I hope it’s not replaying every single day, but it would be awesome.”
