The No. 1-ranked Georgia men’s golf team was chosen on Monday as the top seed for the NCAA Regional to be held next week in Sorrento, Fla.

The Bulldogs are joined by 13 other teams at Red Tail Golf Club as they take their first step toward the NCAA Championship. The regional will take place May 14-16.

Eighty-one teams were placed in the six regionals by the NCAA on Monday. The top five teams from each regional will make up the 30-team field for the NCAA Championship May 26-30 at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

This is the first season that the NCAA is having six regionals. In the past, there have been three regionals with the top 10 teams from each advancing.

“We are excited to be back in the NCAAs, and it means a lot to us to have a No. 1 seed,” Georgia coach Chris Haack said. “This is what we have been working toward all season. I have always said this is the most nerve-racking tournament that we have, and there1s even less margin for error now. But our guys are playing with a lot of confidence and are looking forward to this
next step.”

Georgia will be making its 20th appearance since the NCAA went to the regional format for the 1989 season.

Joining Georgia in Sorrento will be Indiana, South Carolina, Central Florida, Florida State, Arizona, Augusta State, Kentucky, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Iowa, Charlotte, Campbell and Loyola of Maryland. The other No. 1 seeds for the regionals are Clemson, Stanford, Southern California, Washington and Oklahoma State.
