Two softball players earn SEC honors
Georgia sophomore Taylor Schlopy was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for softball, and senior Christie Hamilton was named the Pitcher of the Week according to an announcement made by the league on Monday.
Schlopy and Hamilton helped guide the Bulldogs to a perfect 3-0 record last week with a win over Georgia Southern and a two-game sweep of Arkansas. The three wins closed out the regular season for Georgia, who will enter postseason play with a 39-9 overall record.
Schlopy, a native of West Hills, Calif., batted .600, slugged 1.400 and had an on-base percentage of .846 for the week. In two games at Arkansas, she posted a perfect 1.000 on-base percentage by reaching base in all eight plate appearances. Schlopy went 3-for-3 in the two-game series with three walks and two hit-by-pitches, and she scored six runs out of the eight times she reached base. Schlopy also went perfect 5-for-5 in stolen bases on the week. In game one against Arkansas, Schlopy was hit by a pitch and drew two walks and went on to score a run each time on base. In game two, she tied a career-high with three hits including her 12th home run of the season, which moved her into sole possession of sixth for single-season home runs at Georgia.
On the year, Taylor is batting .425 with a team-leading on-base percentage of .572. She has provided the Bulldogs with 36 runs-batted in and scored a team-best 61 runs, which ranks fifth in Georgia history for a single-season.
Hamilton, a native of Acworth, Ga., appeared in all three games on the week and went 3-0 with a 0.57 earned run average over 12.1 innings. She walked just two and struck out 11. Against Georgia Southern, Hamilton pitched four innings in relief allowing one run while striking out three for the win. In game one against Arkansas, combined with sophomore Sarah McCloud to pitch the 24th no hitter in Georgia softball history by working the final 3.1 innings to earn the win. In game two against the Razorbacks, Hamilton carried a no hitter into the fourth and went on to notch the win with a complete game and six strikeouts.
On the year, Hamilton is 21-7 with a 1.63 ERA with 130 strikeouts in 163.1 innings pitched. The no hitter against Arkansas was the second of the season for Georgia. Hamilton tossed the first no hitter of the year for the Bulldogs, which was also the first of her career, on Feb. 7 against Cal State Northridge.
The Player of the Week honor is the first weekly honor from the SEC for Schlopy. For Hamilton, it marks the second time in her career that she has been named Pitcher of the Week. Hamilton earned her first Pitcher of the Week honor from the SEC on March 30.
