Vandy races out to lead, tops Diamond Dogs 10-2
Vanderbilt scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back, defeating No. 13 Georgia 10-2 Friday at Foley Field and sending the Bulldogs to their seventh straight loss.
Aaron Westlake had three hits including two home runs for the Commodores (30-20, 11-13 SEC) and starter Sonny Gray (4-1) limited the Bulldogs (33-16, 14-11 SEC) to one run on three hits in six innings.
Georgia’s lone run the first eighth innings came on an RBI single by Matt Cerione in the third until Adam Fuller scored in he bottom of the ninth.
“We couldn’t make the tough play,” Georgia coach David Perno said. “They walked us nine times and we only scored two runs. We thought rock bottom was against Jacksonville State but I think this is our absoulte rock bottom.”
Curt Casali reached on a fielder’s choice to give Vanderbilt its first run, then the Commodores scored three more times off back-to-back home runs by Andrew Giobbi and Aaron Westlake.
Georgia’s first two batters reached to start the second but couldn’t score, then Vanderbilt added a pair of unearned runs in the third to go ahead 6-0.
The Bulldogs came back with a run in the third on Cerione’s single, but Vanderbilt got the run back with an RBI single by Riley Reynolds in the fourth. Wesltake launched his second home run to straight away center in the fifth to push the lead to 8-1.
Georgia loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth with a single, a walk and an error, but Sonny Gray (4-1) struck out Joey Lewis and Lyle Allen grounded out to end the inning.
Vanderbilt added two more runs in the seventh, and the Bulldogs again loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning, but again Lewis struck out and Allen grounded out to end the inning.
Georgia added a run in the bottom of the ninth for the final margin.
Trevor Holder (7-3) was charged with the loss after he allowed eight runs–six earned–on nine hits in six innings. Cecil Tanner worked two scoreless innings in relief.
Georgia stranded 13 runners compared to just five for the Commodores.
Game two is slated for Saturday and 1 p.m. and will be televised by CSS. Alex McRee ( 4-1, 3.55) will face off against Vanderbilt’s Mike Minor (4-4, 3.93). Georgia’s six seniors will be honored prior to first pitch.
