South Carolina completes sweep of Diamond Dogs
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Nick Ebert went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI as South Carolina completed a sweep of No. 15 Georgia with a 6-1 win Saturday at Carolina Stadium.
Ebert finished the weekend 5-for-8 with four home runs and 10 RBI as Georgia (35-20, 15-15 SEC) fell to 3-18 against South Carolina (36-19, 17-13 SEC) in Columbia going back to 1996.
“We are fighting it,” Georgia coach David Perno said. “We can’t get any consistency from anybody. Hopefully we’ll get it going. We have been fighting it for a couple of weeks. When we turn it around it will take pressure off some of the guys and we will go from there.”
South Carolina scored a run in the first on a two-out single by Ebert to go ahead 1-0. Ebert then hit his fourth home run of the series in the fourth to give the Gamecocks a 2-0 lead.
Georgia scored its first run on an RBI groundout by Rich Poythress in the eighth to cut the lead to 2-1. It was Poythress’ 77th RBI of the year, tying Gordon Beckham’s single season record from last year.
The Gamecocks put the game away with four two-out runs in the ninth to open up a 6-1 lead.
Blake Cooper (8-4) earned the win while Justin Grimm (2-4) took the loss for the Bulldogs. Grimm allowed just two runs on four hits in 3.2 innings. Justin Earls, Michael Palazzone and Jeff Walters combined to throw 3.1 scoreless innings, and Walters retired all five batters he faced on just 18 pitches.
Georgia returns to action at the SEC Tournament Wednesday in Birmingham. The Bulldogs will be the No. 6 seed or 7 seed pending the outcomes of Saturday’s games.
