Gullickson advances in NCAA singles
COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS – Georgia freshmen Chelsey Gullickson advanced to the round of 32 here Wednesday at the NCAA Singles Championships.
Gullickson, the eighth seed in the event, defeated Miami sophomore Michaela Kissell 6-2,6-4. Gullickson improved to 40-9 this season. She is on a 13-match winning streak. Kissell, ranked No. 49, fell to 36-9. In the round of 32 Thursday, Gullickson will face No. 49 Nadia Abdala (Arizona State). The Sun Devil junior outlasted No. 99 Beier Ko (Harvard) 6-2,6-7,6-4 in her first round match.
Georgia’s other two entries in the singles tournament were eliminated. UCLA junior Yasmin Schnack, a 9-16 seed ranked No. 15, beat Georgia junior Yvette Hyndman 6-3,6-3 in the first round. Hyndman, who is ranked No. 55, ends the year with a 19-23 mark. Bulldog freshman Nadja Gilchrist, ranked No. 56, fell to No. 41 Mari Andersson (California) 6-4,6-4. Gilchrist ends the season with a 36-10 mark.
Also, the NCAA All-Tournament team was announced late Tuesday following the conclusion of the national team championship. The team consists of nine spots, Nos. 1-6 singles and Nos. 1-3 doubles. Gullickson and sophomore Cameron Ellis were named to the All-Tournament squad in singles at No. 1 and No. 6. During the NCAA Championships in College Station, Gullickson went 3-0 at No. 1 singles including two wins over top 10 ranked opponents, while Ellis was a perfect 3-0 at No. 6. Ellis finished her sophomore season with a 33-4 record including 18-2 at No. 6.
The NCAA Doubles Championship begins on Thursday, and the All-America duo of Gilchrist and Gullickson will be among the field of 32. Currently, they are 13-4 overall and one of the top eight seeds in the tournament. They will face the Clemson duo of Josipa Bek and Ina Hadziselimovic, winners of 10 of their last 13 matches. They are 15-7 this year and played primarily in the No. 2 spot in the Tiger lineup.
All matches will be best of three sets and played on the Texas A&M campus at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. Georgia has had two NCAA singles champions in Lisa Spain (1984) and Angela Lettiere (1994). The Bulldogs have never won an NCAA Doubles title but have reached the finals four times.
