Georgia soccer’s Powell invited to U-20 national team camp
Georgia defender Bailey Powell will travel to Carson, Calif, Sunday for a third weeklong training camp with the U-20 United States National Team as it continues to prepare for the 2010 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Germany and defend its World Cup crown.
Players are scheduled to arrive in Carson Sunday for the camp, which will conclude May 31. Powell has appeared in all three national team camps that squad has held since winning the 2008 U-20 World Cup in Chile in November.
“It’s an honor to be called in to camp again and I hope to represent the University of Georgia well,” Powell said.
Powell, a rising sophomore, was one of 25 players and five defenders selected to the camp that was scheduled to include two matches with the Chinese National Team, but the Chinese pulled out of the competitions due to the recent H1N1 virus situation. However, the U-20 campers are scheduled to have a match with Ajax, a women’s club team based in Southern California, at a to be determined time and date and will also attend the Los Angeles Sol and Los Angeles Galaxy professional soccer teams doubleheader on May 30.
“We are really excited for Bailey to be afforded another opportunity with the U-20 national team,” head coach Patrick Baker said. “She finished the spring in very good form and is getting better with each passing national team camp. We wish her the best.”
Powell first traveled to train with the national squad in January, then took part in another training session in late April. Powell is the one of two SEC players to be selected to the camp, which will be run by U-20 head coach Jill Ellis and assistants BJ Snow and Derek Marinatos.
Prior to her freshman season at Georgia, Powell was on the United States U-18 player pool squad and has had previous experience at national team camps with the U-17 and U-15 teams throughout her high school career.
Powell, a Fayetteville native, played every minute of every game last season for the Bulldogs and was a mainstay on the Georgia defense. She earned Second Team All-SEC and Freshman All-SEC Team honors, and was also named to the Duke Classic and SEC All-Tournament teams during her freshman year.
