Georgia softball’s Goler ties SEC RBI record
Charlotte Morgan set new standards for hitting in the Southeastern Conference. Alisa Goler has met those standards.
With her two home runs in No. 6 Georgia’s 6-4 Super Regional win over Ohio State, the Bulldog’s third baseman hit for her 78th and 79th RBI this season. Goler, a sophomore from Frankfort, Ill., has now tied the SEC single-season record with 79 runs batted in this year.
“I think (Goler’s first home run in the fifth inning) was a huge hit, but we count on players up and down the lineup,” said Georgia head coach Lu Harris-Champer. “(Goler) had two great at-bats, and the great thing about it was that she learned from her first at-bat.”
Goler tied the mark in the bottom of the sixth inning on a lead-off home run over the trees in right-center field, her second homer and third hit of the night.
“It’s a great honor,” said Goler, who already owns Georgia single-season records in RBIs and home runs. “Charlotte Morgan is a great hitter and she really came into the SEC and set the precedent.”
Morgan, now a junior at Alabama, broke the previous SEC RBI record of 77 in 2008 as a sophomore – she led the nation in RBIs and became a first-team All-American that season.
Goler, who hit her 22nd and 23rd home run against Ohio State, also has legitimate shot at breaking the SEC single-season home run record of 25 set by Alabama’s Kelly Kretschman in 1998.
She will get the chance to pursue both records in Game 2 against Ohio State in the Athens Super Regional, which starts at 4:30 on Friday at the Georgia Softball Complex.
