Track & Field head to NCAA East Regionals
After a relatively successful SEC Outdoor Championships, Georgia track and field will now send qualified athletes to compete in the NCAA East Regional in Greensboro, N.C. on Friday and Saturday.
The No. 20 Bulldog men will send 16 athletes to participate in 13 total events, placing multiple athletes in the hammer throw, 100-meter dash, shot put and the relays. Seniors Michael Proctor and Kevin Dickson, as well as junior Israel Machovec, will compete in multiple regional events.
Junior Chris Hall enters the meet as the only Bulldog male to hold the top spot in his respective event, the javelin, with a throw of over 265 feet. The 2009 SEC javelin champion will be looking to win the regional title as he sets his sights on defending his NCAA title from last season.
Senior Justin Gaymon sits at No. 2 in the 400-meter hurdles, behind South Carolina’s Johnny Dutch, who edged him out to win the 2009 SEC crown. Gaymon is the two-time defending East Regional champion in the event, and will look to make it three in a row as he works towards earning his first national title.
The Georgia men have a significant advantage in the hammer throw in Greensboro, entering with three throwers placing in the top seven slots in the event. Nate Rolfe (3rd), Branislav Danis (4th) and John Freeman (7th) all have significant shots at placing for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldog men also have a top-5 time in the 4×100-meter relay (39.75 seconds).
The Georgia women will send 10 athletes to compete in nine total events. Sophomores Georgina Nembhard and Rachel Travis will compete in multiple events.
After not scoring at the SEC Championships, Julianne Toto still holds the top regional mark in the women’s pole vault (13 feet, 5 inches). The senior from Red Banks, N.J., competed in the East Regional during her freshman and sophomore seasons, but will look to place for the first time in her career.
Nembhard and junior Michelle Thompson also have a legitimate shot at placing in their events. Thompson holds the second-best regional mark in the women’s javelin (over 177 feet), while Nembhard has a top-5 time in the 100-meter dash.
Events will begin on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at North Carolina A&T State University.
