Georgia breaks WCWS home run record
Georgia softball set a Women’s College World Series record by hitting four home runs in a game en route to a 7-5 victory over the Michigan Wolverines.
The Bulldog power clinic came at the expense of Michigan’s two All-American pitchers Nikki Nemitz and Jordan Taylor, neither of whom had an answer for the young Bulldog bats. Each of the home runs came off the bat of underclassmen – two sophomores and a freshman – as the Bulldogs stayed alive to fight another day in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Sophomore Taylor Schlopy would hit two homers to go along with her four RBIs in the contest to lead the Bulldog effort at the plate. The first-team All-American centerfielder from West Hills, Calif. became just the fourth player in WCWS history to hit two home runs in a single game.
Schlopy would lead off the bottom of the first inning with the first home run of the night, followed by a three-run blast into the right field stands to give Georgia the lead in the second inning.
Freshman second baseman Ashley Pauly would strike again for Georgia in the fourth inning, hitting her first career home run to tie the WCWS record of three homers.
Sophomore Brianna Hesson, a first baseman from Sugar Hill, Ga., broke the WCWS record for Georgia in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo shot to right field
Georgia will hope to bring their powerful bats against Washington on Saturday – who defeated the 3-1 Bulldogs in Game 1. The Bulldogs will need to win two games against the Huskies to advance into the finals of the double-elimination tournament.
