Men’s tennis ends season at No. 6

For the 19th time in the past 21 seasons, the University of Georgia men’s tennis team has finished the year nationally ranked in the top seven. The 2009 squad concluded the year No. 6 in the ITA rankings after going 25-4 and advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight. The Bulldogs finished No. 1 in 1999, 2001, 2007 and 2008.

Georgia junior Nate Schnugg earned All-America honors in singles and doubles while junior Jamie Hut was a doubles All-American with Schnugg. The Schnugg/Hunt team ended the season ranked No. 7 with a 32-12 record. They reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships as the fourth seed.

Schnugg went 37-15 in singles with 24 wins over ranked opponents. He advanced to the round of 16 of the NCAA Singles Championship as a 9-16 seed. Schnugg’s final singles ranking was No. 10.

By virtue of their final ranking, NCAA Tournament seed and finish, Schnugg and Hunt earned All-America honors. In singles, student-athletes can be an All-American by being a top 16 seed in the NCAA Championships, or reach the round of 16 in the NCAA Championships, or finish in the top 20 of the final ITA rankings. For doubles All-America honors, student-athletes must either be a top eight seed at the NCAA Championships, or reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships, or, finish in the top 10 of the final ITA rankings.

Also in the final singles rankings, Hunt came in at No. 62 after going 29-11 while sophomore Javier Garrapiz was No. 63 with a 33-9 record. Gararpiz was a team-best 21-3 in dual matches.

Georgia’s team highlights included reaching the finals of the National Team Indoor Championships, winning the SEC Eastern Division, advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals and going 15-0 at home to extend its current streak to 62 consecutive victories at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The top six teams in the final rankings were Southern California, Ohio State, Virginia, Ole Miss, UCLA and Georgia.
